Review of Hush, Hush

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
Official Website
Description: "When Nora and Patch are forced together as lab partners, Nora would rather fall to her death than put up with his elusive answers to her questions, his teasing, and his infuriatingly handsome ace and hypnotizing eyes. It seems Patch was put on earth just to drive her crazy.

But before long, Nora's defenses start to break down as her curiosity about Patch heats up. Why does he always seem to be wherever she is and know exactly what she's thinking? How does he know what to say to both attract and repulse her? And what is up with those V-shaped scars on his chiseled back?

As their connection grows stronger, Nora's own life becomes increasingly fragile. Nora needs to decide: Is Patch the one who wants to do her harm or the one who will keep her safe? Has she fallen for on of the fallen?"

Review: With all the bad reviews about Hush, Hush on Goodreads, I thought to myself: Why did everyone hate this book, but I liked it soo much?So I'll admit, that skepticism kept me from writing my review, along with my superbusy schedule. But I am finally putting a positive review up for this book, no matter what the haters other people think.

Hush, Hush is your average paranormal romance story. Girl is paired with boy as her lab partner. Girl is drawn to boy no matter the dangers and mysteriousness. Girl figures out boy's secret. Girl gets mixed up with boy's "kind" of people. Big fight scene. SEQUEL.

So this is looking to be a write off of every other paranormal romance book, right? But I loved it. I guess I'm a sucker for those kinds of books, but this book was great. I loved the characters, and the background story was intriguging and believable. Well, as believable a supernatural book can get. So I'll explain:

The book begins with Nora, the main character girl, going into Health class with her best friend Vee, and annoying best friend character.I guess every book needs one. They've been partners for the entire school year, but today, in the middle of April, the teacher decides to get everyone out of their comfort zones and choses new partners. The best friends bitch, but in the end, Nora gets matched with Patch, the above mentioned boy. Patch is a sarcastic, know-it-all, and quite possibly the best hero/villian I've ever had the honor of reading about. His dialogue was witty and fresh, and it made me laugh with how uncomfortable he made Nora. Take a look :
They're asking questions about each other for a health project:
"Religion?" I asked more firmly.
Patch dragged a hand thoughtfully along the line of his jaw. "Not religion...cult."
"You belong to a cult?" I realized too late that while I sounded suprised, I shouldn't have.
"As it turns out, I'm in need of a healthy female sacrifice. I'd planned on luring her into trusting me first, but if you're ready now.."
Any smile left on ymf ace slid away. "You're not impressing me."
"I haven't started trying yet.
So, yeah, it's like this the whole book: flirty, cute banter. Mostly on Patch's part.

The other characters are good too. From what I read Crescendo is about Nora's dad's death(?)/, which should be cool because they never really went into it.

I didn't mention the supernatural character in the book.  It probably won't come as a shocker, seeing the cover and all, but the book is about angels. I've never read a YA book about guardian angels and such, so this was a first for me. The back story is awesome, about how Patch was sent for Nora and how he fell. That makes him hotter, by the way, that he's a fallen angel. Oh my god, I'm falling for fictional characters :X

A main plot in the book is that someone is stalking Nora. Like one of the times she sees the person in her room, she calls the cops, and when she goes back to her room with the cops, the room is perfectly normal. I thought it was Elliot the entire time. He was a major creeper, but I was wrong. Well, I wasn't entirely wrong, but that wasn't the right answer, either.

I shall be reading Crescendo, when it comes out in the library, obviously.
And I have a question for those who have read The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare:
-I have like a $30 gift card for Barnes and Noble and I wanted to but the 3 book set of that series. I heard it was amazing. Do you think I should buy them or just get them from the library?

  1. Great review, Lauren! I'm glad you came out and told people what you really liked about this book. I actually really enjoyed Hush, Hush, too. I enjoyed Patch's character, and he and Nora were perfectly balanced in my opinion.

I'm definitely excited to start Crescendo next week!
